    VOCATIONAL MOMENT:

DON FRANKLIN, Director of the Lafayette YMCA for the past 2.5 years and with YMCA for nearly 30 years, started life and his career in Chicago. Together with his wife, Mary, they have two children attending the University of Wisconsin at Stevens Point. He feels the YMCA's mission relates to the mission of Rotary. The local YMCA has over 5,200 members and serves many more. It partners with over 30 organizations.

    PROGRAM:
DAVE LAHR introduced Mary Cutler, Tippecanoe County Naturalist and a 1980 Purdue graduate. "Uses of the Wabash River" was the title of her talk, but she really wanted to spark conversation on the sustainability of natural resources, with the Wabash River being this area's most obvious candidate. Wabash River in native American language means bright white or water flowing over white stones, implying that at that time the river was clean. Mary suggests that the community bring many groups together to discuss uses of the river taking into account the natural, cultural, historic and economic aspects. Several Rotarians joined the discussion after her remarks, indicating some interest in the suggestion.
    VISITING ROTARIANS:

    ED ELLIOTT, Naples, FL,

    GUESTS:

Juan Velasquez and Mat Verlager, guests of MARNE HELGESEN; Becky Robledo, guest and sister of PAM WINDLER; Carl Hager, guest of JANE TURNER.

    • A resignation has been received from MARY OSTRYE, who hopes to be able to attend more meetings by transferring to Daybreak.

    PRESIDENT SUSAN'S WISDOM:

Three hikers became disoriented in the woods and lost their way. As they crashed through the underbrush, they came at last to a wide, raging river. On the opposite bank, they could see a well-market trail. The three gave some thought to what they should do next and decided to pray.

The first hiker prayed, "God, please give me the strength I need to cross this river." He felt his arms and legs grow stronger, and jumped into the river. He struggled against the current, gasping and choking, and finally dragged himself ashore, exhausted and half- drowned.

The second hiker considered this and prayed, "God, please give me the strength and tools I need to cross this river." He also felt his arms and legs grow stronger, and a kayak and paddle appeared near the river's edge. The hiker climbed into the kayak and paddled vigorously, banging into the rocks and even flipping over before he reached the opposite side and dragged himself ashore, exhausted and half-drowned.

The third hiker considered all this and prayed, "God, please give me the strength, tools and intelligence I need to cross this river." Almost immediately, the hiker was transformed into a woman. She consulted a map, hiked a half mile upstream, and crossed the bridge.
