The Haiti news - We have a driller for the wells, just waiting for the money to be transferred to the Pignon, Haiti bank to get started. I have been communicating with their president by e-mail.

    ROTARY FACT:

Rotary club members are part of a diverse group of professional leaders working to address various community and international service needs. Through community service and other means, Rotary club members help promote peace and understanding throughout the world. Our members are our most important asset. They are the force that allows Rotary to carry out its many humanitarian efforts and achieve its mission.

    PROGRAM:
STAN MITHOEFER reviewed the fund raising projects approved by the Board of Directors for this year. In light of grumbles received from members that they are asked for money too often, the Board changed the approach to raise funds by asking the community to help us with our projects. Nelson's BBQ Chicken is highly regarded (people drive out of their way to purchase it once they taste it). We will be selling the chicken before all of the home football games on the corner of State Road 25 and U.S. 52 (the old Sarge Biltz location) from four hours before kickoff to one hour before or until we are sold out.
TOM MORAN has tickets for everyone to sell. Chicken is not only enjoyed by tailgaters. Family, friends, special social events, church activities and many others would be delighted with delicious, prepared chicken. It also freezes well.

FRED ANDERSON asked members to volunteer on game days to actually sell the chicken. This is a great opportunity to get to know fellow Rotarians. In addition to taking money and handing out boxes of prepared chicken, volunteers are needed to put up signs along the highway. Someone brave will get to wear a Chicken Outfit and entertain passing motorists.

Since it is so important to know how many chickens to order for the first two games, FRED says he'll buy lunch for the member who sells the most tickets for the first game. This is an offer you don't want to miss out on. SELL THOSE TICKETS!

Our other activity involves partnering with Habitat for Humanity to put on the Gus Macker 3 on 3 Basketball tournament. This tournament is a well-established tradition in Lafayette with several built-in participants. Dan Guildenvecher, president of the Purdue Chapter of Habitat for Humanity told us that he is very excited about the project. They hope to build a house with the proceeds and Rotary is committed to building a playground for the CAPE Project at Washington School. This is a marvelous opportunity for students to get to know Rotarians, and vice versa.

PHIL SWAIN outlined the tasks to done.

It's just about 5 weeks now until the Gus Macker Tournament, September 30 - October 1.

Excitement is building! We need Rotarians, their families and their friends to answer the call and assist in one or more of the following ways:

    1. Sign up teams to play. More information and registration facilities for the tournament are available at www.macker.com. Online registration deadline is September 11. If you prefer, call Phil Swain 488-1345 for assistance. You can also call Phil to obtain a poster to hang in a good place!

    2. Sign up court sponsors. For $300 - $500, an organization will have a 2' x 8' banner above a portable basket and four 30-second "commercials" each day over the tournament PA system. Multiple individuals can band together and split the cost of a court sponsorship. We need about 30 sponsorships to meet our funding goal.

    3. Volunteer to lend a hand at the tournament. We'd like to have at least 100 Rotarian volunteers to augment the Habitat student army. From set-up to registration to officiating the games to tearing down the venue. We'll have more specifics on our needs shortly.

Questions? PHIL SWAIN, TOM FREY, and STAN MITHOEFER have the answers.

STAN and his committee have already put many hours of work into making these ventures successful. It is now up to each member to play a part.

    PRESIDENT JAN'S THOUGHT:

It is our attitude at the beginning of a difficult task which, more than anything else, will affect its successful outcome.
