Local club focuses on service commitment

The Rotary Club of Lafayette, in conjunction with University student groups, will continue its commitment to service with two new fundraisers this year. The Rotary Club, which was founded in Lafayette in 1916, is composed of 231 members of Purdue faculty and staff and community business people. The group meets weekly at the University Inn for lunch and educational programming, where it emphasizes the importance of serving others. "Supporting the youth and the community is our priority, especially the community development area," said Stanley Mithoefer, a Rotary board member and senior director of the club's community avenue of service committee. The club offers service opportunities in both its domestic and international programs in Haiti and El Salvador.

The Rotary Club will be teaming up with Habitat for Humanity to sponsor the Gus Macker 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament in Lafayette on Sept. 30 and Oct. 1. Profits from the event will go to sponsoring a community house and building a playground for Lafayette community preschoolers. "This is just another example of how the community and University students come together to support an activity," said Mithoefer.

The Rotaract Club, Purdue's collegiate level of the Rotary Club, will be assisting the Rotary Club in another of its planned fundraisers. The club, which started in 2004 at Purdue, also enforces the importance of community service. "Our goal is to foster a lifelong dedication to helping others," said Kara Jensen, president of the Rotaract Club. There are currently between 10 and 15 members in the club with a variety of majors represented. We have members in chemical engineering, political science and kinesiology majors, said Jensen.

The partnership of clubs will begin selling Nelson's barbecue chicken before every football game. Purchasers can stop by and pick up their chicken on the northeast corner of State Rd. 25 and Sagamore Parkway. Half-chickens will sell for $5 each and water will be sold for $1. Funds raised from this event will go to supporting the Rotary Club's domestic and international programs. The Rotaract Club will use its proceeds to help those in need. "Our proceeds will go to the Wheelchair Foundation, an organization that provides a wheelchair to people who can't afford them," said Jensen.
