    ANNOUNCEMENTS:

    • FRED ANDERSON said we have a 3rd opportunity to sell Nelson's BBQ Chicken this Saturday. This is a club project and all members need to help spread the word to the community to get their chicken from Rotarians on Saturday.

    • PHIL SWAIN announced that we're two weeks away from Gus Macker. It will be a busy two weeks! All hands are needed on deck!


    PROPOSED NEW MEMBERS:

    B. Richard Donahue, sponsored by FRITZ COHEN; Chase Slaughter, sponsored by VICKI BURCH; Jan Farkas, sponsored by KEN DECKER; and Richard Richardson, sponsored by GENE HILLS have been approved for membership by the Board of Directors. If there are no objections, they will be introduced soon.

    PROGRAM:
    President Elect JOHN SANDERSON introduced Bob Bernhard, Professor of Mechanical Engineering and Associate VP for Research at Purdue University. He heads the Institute for Safe, Quiet and Durable Highways at Purdue. We learned that there are for ways the noise is made when energy is created by tires on pavement, The Hammer; The Clapper, The Squeaker, and The Suction Cup. This energy is amplified giving us The Horn Effect, The Pop Bottle Effect, The Organ Pipe Effect, and The Loud Speaker Effect. Efforts are being made to improve pavement to create less noise when rubber hits the road.

    FRED KUIPERS introduced Lauren Indiano and Jacob Ziolkowski from Harrison High School. Each received a certificate and a travel mug with the four- way test to commemorate meeting with us. VISITING ROTARIANS:

    Board Meeting Highlights:
    • The Board accepted the recommendation of the Finance Committee to adopt improvements to Investment Policy made by JIM HOBBS.
    • There was discussion of promotional ideas to improve sales of Nelson's BBQ Chicken.
    • There will be no meeting on Tuesday, December 26th. We will meet on Tuesday, January 2nd.
    • The Board approved a charge to the Planning Committee that includes working on a Planning Guide for Effective Rotary Clubs for 2008-2009 so that Vice President ROB GALBRAITH will have a viable plan in place when he assumes office as President; developing recommendations to promote attendance at weekly luncheon meetings and other club activities; and examining the Club's committee structure, taking into consideration RI's recommendations.
    • The Vocational Avenue Service which includes the Youth Committee would like to emphasize the 4 Way Test and establish stronger links between Rotaract members and our Club.

    Awards and Honors:

    Hospitality and Tourism Management RAY KAVANAUGH, professor and head, received the Champion of Education Award from the International Council of Hotel Restaurant and Institutional Education (I-CHRIE). The award is given upon special occasion by I-CHRIE's board of directors to honor a corporation or individual who has demonstrated a long-standing commitment to special initiatives that advance the mission of I- CHRIE.
