JOHN had a long and meaningful life. ANNOUNCEMENTS: Pub Club will be at Pablanos on Wednesdays at 5:30. This is a wonderful way to get to know your fellow Rotarians and to introduce prospective members to the group.
Allison Kaminski, a Purdue Rotaract member, announced that 25% of all purchases at Noodles & Company on Chauncey from 5 – 9 tonight will help the Rotaract Club with their fund raising goal.
Jewelry made by ELSA JANLE will be available December 18th. This is a great way to make someone happy and to support our club’s local projects.
RENEE ROAMES gave us information about our Rotary Youth Exchange student, Giovana Zampoli, from Brazil. It would build good will and better friendships if members of our club would include her in one of your familyactivities. She would enjoy attending a sporting event or a music concert. There are a few slots needing to be filled on Saturday, December 15th to ring the bell for Salvation Army. This annual friendly competition with Kiwanis to see who can raise more money helps to keep the Holidays happy for many in our community. Sign up on-line or call or e-mail FLOYD GARROTT. LETA KELLEY announced that the December 15th “A trip to the Opera” at East Side Nine at 12:55 p.m. is followed by dinner at Nine Irish Brothers at Tippecanoe Mall. If you can’t take in the opera, you can still join the fun at dinner. Contact JOHN BARRETT or LETA KELLEY so they know how many to expect at the restaurant. JOHN BARRETT asked TOM MORAN to draw a ticket. The owner of the ticket was LETA KELLEY. Unfortunately, the Aces eluded her and she declined a consolation prize.
VOCATIONAL MOMENT: STEVE KNECHT introduced DAVE SATTLER, President of Lafayette Printing Co. and cartoonist for the Journal & Courier. He graduated from Purdue in Industrial Management. With no art training, he became a successful cartoonist, with three books of cartoons to his credit and the 2004 Best Cartoonist in Indiana award. He is married to Nancy, has four grown children and lots of grand children.
ROTARY MOMENT: CHRISTA KECK reminded us that November is The Rotary Foundation month. The annual fund supports many projects around the world. Rotarians are expected to contribute something to TRF every year to maintain these very worthwhile projects.
CONGRATULATIONS: RICHARD BARTHOLOMEW, President of the LAFAYETTE ROTARY CLUB FOUNDATION, presented JACK and LETA KELLEY and JIM TURLEY with Golden Service Plus certificates. Thank you for your gifts, which make our project possible. Photos to be inserted at a later date.
BIRTHDAY TABLE: BETTY SUDDARTH, December Birthday Table Chair, introduced members celebrating another year in December and announced that, so far, $3,725 has been contributed by this generous group. We sang Happy Birthday in celebration.
CONGRATULATIONS: CHRISTA KECK presented SUSAN HYCHKA with a new Paul Harris pin. This one has one ruby on it, representing PHF plus 4. SUSAN’S contributions insure that the work of Rotary around the world can continue. PROGRAM: CHIP RUTLEDGE introduced Joseph Hornett, Vice President, Purdue Research Park, whose topic was: “What it takes to be the Leading Research Park in the Nation”. He opened with a “fun fact about Joe” saying he is a high school football official in his spare time. He then showed us an aerial photo of Purdue Research Park, which is celebrating its 50th anniversary. He thanked SONYA MARGERUM for leading the City of West Lafayette to being an early investor in Research Park. Purdue Research Foundation received its initial funding from David Ross and J. K. Lilly, who each invested $25,000. Joe went over the Mission Statement and the Vision of the Foundation. He then showed us the real estate owned by the foundation in Tippecanoe County, in and around Purdue and the Research Park. The foundation is Purdue’s landlord with about 90 leases with the university. There is a master plan for commercial development around the university and research park. Satellite research park campuses in Merrillville, Indianapolis and New Albany give Indiana a substantial lead in economic development.
