February 2016
Fellow Rotarians, February 1st is here, football season and the holidays are behind us and now we turn our thoughts to a successful conclusion of the 2015-2016 Rotary year. Roger and I have completed all 52 official visits to the district clubs. Visiting clubs has been a very pleasurable journey, making lasting memories and new friends along the way. It has been exciting watching Rotarians “Be a Gift to the World” this year through service projects and individual kindness and giving. February is Peace and Conflict Prevention/Resolution Month. District 6860 is seeking qualified candidates to apply for a Rotary Peace Fellowship for the 2017-2018 Rotary year. Candidates have until 31 May to submit applications to Don Wiginton, District 6860 Chairman of the Global Grants Committee, at Don@wiginton.com or call 205-942-9233. The district must submit endorsed applications to The Rotary Foundation by 1 July. The Rotary Peace and Conflict Studies Program provides professionals the opportunity to be trained in conflict resolution and mediation strategies. The program helps participants become better equipped to prevent and resolve conflict and to foster policies and create settings that ensure peace worldwide. On February 23, 2016, Rotary celebrates its 111th birthday. Be sure to plan a special event in your Rotary Club to celebrate Rotary’s birthday with a focus on service to others. Volunteer at a local food pantry or soup kitchen. Hold a Rotary Day at Work in honor of vocational service. Sponsor a speech or theme writing contest at a local school. Plan a “Done in a Day” project for your Rotary Club members. Coordinate a project with members of the Interact or Rotaract Club sponsored by the club. Collect items for those in need, such as shoes, coats, eyeglasses, school supplies, etc., and distribute them as a Rotary Day event. Save the date-May 5-7, 2016-Rotary District Conference. It will be held in Huntsville at the Embassy Suites. You will be hearing more about the conference very shortly as we celebrate Rotary year 2015-2016 with memories, fun and examples of Rotarians being “A gift to the world!”
