DISTRICT 5300 TAKES OVER LONG BEACH HYATT
MILLENNIUM DISTRICT CONFERENCE, MAY 18-21

GOVERNOR'S WELCOME

Angela and I are pleased to extend our warmest personal greetings and best wishes to all Rotarians their families and guests attending our wonderful "Back to the Future" Millennium District Conference.  This is a very special weekend to celebrate the accomplishments of our 62 great clubs in District 5300 as well as the fellowship we share as Rotarians.

Those in attendance at the conference will have the best possible opportunity of seeing Rotary in action.  You will experience the warmth of Rotary fellowship and friendship.  You will take part in a program designed to foster a better understanding of Rotary; thereby increasing our ability to serve and advance the ideals of Rotary.

On this proud and happy occasion, which is the culmination of the efforts of so many dedicated Rotarians, I extend to them my sincere appreciation.  It is my earnest desire that when our conference ends, sparks of enthusiasm will be carried back to each and every club in our District so that interest in Rotary and service to our local and global communities may be revitalized, personalized and bridges of friendships built for a peaceful, friendly and neighborly world.

Once again, my very best wishes as we all celebrate this milestone in our District's history.

ROTARY WORLD MOURNS DEATH OF PAST RI PRESIDENT
From Ed Futa, Associate R.I. General Secretary

It is with regret that I inform District Rotarians of the death of Paulo V. C. Costa, Past President of RI (1990-91) and Past Director (1978-80), who passed away on Monday, April 10, 2000.

Past President Costa was a member of the Rotary Club of Santos, Sao Paulo, Brazil.  He is survived by his wife, Rita, three sons, Paulo Eduardo, Cesar Luiz, Jorge Augusto and his daughter, Carmen Cinthia.  Rita may be addressed at Praca Rotary 42, 11055-230 Santos, Sao Paulo, Brazil.

During his year as RI President, Paulo visited the Glendora club to help dedicate a Scout Youth Hut which  Glendora Rotarians constructed following a $150,000 fund raising effort.

GOVERNOR'S MESSAGE
By Dr. Garbis Der Yeghian, District Governor (La Verne)

PEACE, SALAM, SHALOM -- Greetings from Lebanon -- the ancient land of Phoenicia, where I have the good fortune of attending the annual conference of RI District 2450.  Rotary International President Carlo Ravizza, Rotary leaders and Rotarians from many countries are in Beirut proudly celebrating their accomplishments.  The celebration is particularly fitting in the peaceful setting of this beautiful country by the Mediterranean which was devastated by war.  Hence, the importance of the central role of Rotarians to promote the ideals of peace, goodwill and understanding.

I wish to extend my congratulations to all District 5300 club presidents and Rotarians for their great strides and unprecedented achievements in the following three major areas: a. Membership Development, b. Support of The Rotary Foundation and c. District Conference registration.  This Rotary year, because of your dedication and commitment, will be recognized and long remembered as one of the most remarkable years in the history of District 5300.  I am particularly proud for having the unique opportunity of working with each one of you in accomplishing our ambitious goals.

Our Millennium District conference represents the culmination of your hard work.  Let me take this opportunity to salute and thank you for making dreams come true, for new and lasting friendships, and above all making a difference in your respective communities and the world.  Angela and I look forward to personally greeting you and thanking you at our District Conference.

I would like to close by inviting you to continue our noble mission with pride and dedication to bring hope, love and understanding to those in need at home and abroad.

Greatness is not found in possessions, power, position or prestige.
It is discovered in goodness, humility, service, and character.

RECENT PEACE CONFERENCE...VERY REWARDING
From James A. Speer, Past Director, R.I.  (Covina)

The recent 7th Annual Peace Conference, on Saturday, April 15, 2000,  at the University of La Verne, which preceded Easter and Passover, will be a lasting memory of those who attended.  Why? Because it was a rare opportunity to experience the messages and virtues of five major religions.  The leading clergy were:

A Hindu Perspective
Dr. Lina Gupta, Professor of Philosophy

A Christian Perspective
Dr. Richard Mouw, President Fuller Seminary

A Buddhist Perspective
Reverend Kusala, Monk, Int'l Buddhist Meditation Center

A Jewish Perspective
Rabbi Steven Jacobs, Temple Kol Tikvah

An Islamic Perspective
Mr. Salam Al-Marayati, National Director of Muslim Public Affairs Council

Rod Federwich. past president of the Rotary Club of Rancho Del Chino, served as master of ceremonies.  The opening and closing remarks were delivered by Governor Garbis Der Yeghian.  Elmer Jordan, past director of Rotary International, led off the morning with a summary of Rotary history and mission to unite rather than divide people in the world.

The conference reinforced the fact that we live in times, unlike the past, when there is so much adversity and often conflict perpetrated in the name of defending or perpetrating religious extremism.  The marvelous result of this conference was a demonstration of outstanding spokes people offering their perspective of the importance of faith.  This sharing, with respect for each religion, was truly inspirational.

The theme of the conference, "World Religions and the Quest For Peace in the 21st Century" gave all participants the opportunity to gain a historical insight to religions other than their own.  This is the first Peace Conference which centered on religion, rather that regional territorial conflicts, as an important aspect of the struggle for a more peaceful world.  As usual the success of these conferences goes to the vision of District Governor Garbis Der Yeghian and the sponsoring Rotary Club of La Verne, their consistent efforts to have better informed Rotarians.  This mission is in line with Rotary International's objective of creating world understanding and peace.  It is interesting to note that the conference was funded by a vast number of Rotary clubs, individuals, and industries.

The conference was concluded by the renowned, Dr. Richard Dekmejian, who is Professor of Political Science at the University of Southern California.  His political assessment of the expansion of religions in the world was most interesting.  He reminded the audience that too often religious leaders used their power and influence to control and manipulate people in the struggle for land and more power.

Professor Dekmejian pointed out that the media does not focus enough on the most important news of the day when its news gathering and commentary spends so much time and space on such matters as the O.J. Simpson trial and the current Elian Gonzales issue.  Press coverage, such as this, over shadows the most important matters facing a world which dreams of greater stability and peace between religons and countries.

The audience seemed greatly pleased with the tone and objectives of the conference.  Some even expressed it was refreshing to witness various religious leaders being tolerant of one another.  An interesting sidelight to the conference was a delightful luncheon held for the conference sponsors.  This event was highlighted by an impromptu music presentation by Reverend Kusala, the Buddhist Monk, who gave an excellent and animated rendition of the Blues on his pocket harmonica!  A fitting climax, reminding all that music is also a bridge which unites different cultures and backgrounds.

DISTRICT LEADS WESTERN U.S. IN ANNUAL GIVING
From Wayne Whistler, PDG (Glendora)

Statistics compiled by RI for the period July 1, 2000 through March 31, 2000 place District 5300 at the head of all Rotary Districts in the western U.S., including Hawaii.  District Rotarians contributed $386,703 in total annual giving, which amounts to $140.11 per capita.  The annual giving amount is 128.90% of the goal that Governor Garbis set for the District at the beginning of his Rotary year.  The District placed 3rd in annual giving for all districts in the Rotary world.

The per capita giving amount placed the District 2nd when compared to all other western US Districts.

A ROTARIANS RECOLLECTION
From Paul Finchamp, Assistant Governor (Pasadena Sunrise)

An acquaintance of mine has passed away.  Actually I would prefer to call him a friend, but one encounter and my deepest respect for him doesn't mean Birk Lefler would even remember my name.  I met Birk Lefler in the accompaniment of Past District Governor John H. Clay sometime around 1988.  John referred to Birk as an icon of his in Rotary.  John introduced me to several people that were Rotary icons of his: John Anderson, Bill Knoke, Herbert Hezlep III, Keith Burnham and Taro Kawa, to name a few.  Thank you John for this rich introduction to the lifeblood of Rotary, its leaders.

Birk was one of those rare leaders in Rotary that always put his best foot forward by accepting his responsibility seriously.  He rarely declined to help on any project and shared Rotary deeply with family and friends.  As I knew him, he appeared a quiet unassuming man just doing the work of Rotary.  Some do service to our cause as spokespersons for Rotary, which, by the way, is a good way to amass a Rotary mug collection.  Others, like Birk were simply "just doing" the work of Rotary.  It is no surprise to me to learn that Birk included da bequest to the Rotary foundation.  He recognized that the needs of the world would not vanish at his death, and chose to fund the Foundation he admired so much.  In this way he has achieved immortality as his name will long be remembered as a champion for our cause.

When District Governor's learn of such a bequest they are often at a loss on how to explain and/or recognize the gift.  For many, the gift is a sort of serendipity, an unexpected or unforeseen, but delightful, consequence of planning.  To the benefactor however, this is the fulfillment of a belief and it offers the opportunity to make a difference, even from the grave.

What happens when these great leaders die?  Is their spirit forever captured in the memories of the club members that knew them when they lived?  Are the replaced in duty and in spirit by another Rotarian in his club?  We owe a duty, nay responsibility, to the forefathers of Rotary, of yesterday and of yesteryear to not let these names and efforts be forgotten.  Thank you Birk for being such a shining example to all of us.

REMEMBER! SHORT & LONG TERM EXCHANGES ARE
OPEN TO CHILDREN OF ROTARIANS

SUMMER 2000 SHORT TERM HOST FAMILIES STILL NEEDED
From Dick Miller, District Short Term Exchange Chair (Henderson)

Arrangements for Short Term youth exchange students for the summer of 2000 is now a top priority for our committee.  Each Rotary club is asked to bring up the subject of Home Hosting for a 3 week period this summer.  Hosting periods vary from June through August and can be adjusted to fit almost any schedule.  During this past Rotary year we HOSTED 26 students from 6 different countries.  For further information contact Dick Miller @ 702.558.5476, or Frank Carroll @ 702.294.3173

DISTRICT-WIDE INTERNATIONAL LITERACY PROJECT LAUNCHED
From Doloras Diaz-Carey, District International Literacy Chair (East Los Angeles)

If your club is still searching for an International Project, we've got one for you!  Imagine making literacy a reality for the children of Winterveldt, South Africa.  Join the Winterveldt School Project of the Rotary Club of Pretoria East, TOGETHER WE CAN!  We think you will find it compelling.  Through the efforts of Michael Fels  (East Los Angeles),  Annaeus Schjodt of the Pretoria club, and Governor Garbis support for the Project has become a District 5300 Project....Funds for paying the teachers are urgently needed....It is estimated that it will take about five years before the school can finally become independent and can be transfered to the community to manage.  Our goal is to collect an average of $10.00 from each Rotarian in District 5300...a total of $28,000. To do that, Governor Garbis proposes the following " per club" contribution:

Up to 25 members:  $250 per club
26 to 40 members:  $400 per club
41 to 60 members:  $600 per club
Over 60 members   $1000 per club

Please consider this very important project.  Make checks payable to R.I. District 5300 and mail to: Dr Michael Fels, 5151 State University Dr., Los Angeles, Ca 90032.

SOUTHERN NEVADA ROTARIANS WORK "LOTS"
From Randy Pote  (Las Vegas North)

For the past four years, Southern Nevada Rotarians have handled the parking duties at Las Vegas professional golf tournaments.  On Easter Sunday, close to 100 area Rotarians finished yet another parking project at the Las Vegas Senior Classic.

Nearly 1/2 of the Las Vegas Valley Clubs were represented in the dirt parking lots at the Tournament  Players Club in Summerlin from April 19 - 23.  In the past, monies raised have been donated to Classrooms on Wheels, mini-grants, the Happy Feet program and other pressing needs.  Each participating club is given money based on the number of hours its members work.

In addition to cheerfully handling patrons, cadies, sponsors, media and the general public's questions and problems, they also have transported very senior and handicapped people to the front gate.  This year a worker had car problems and was transported home by a friendly Rotarian.

Over the past four years Southern Nevada Rotarians have raised over $50,000 for area charitable needs and had a good time!!

LAS VEGAS NORTH MINI GRANTS ENHANCE CREATIVITY
From Northern View, April 12, 2000

The Las Vegas North Rotary club raised $8,129 for their mini grant program--up from last year's $3,000--to be divided into 29 grants distributed to 30 teachers in increments from $200 to $300.  The grants were awarded to North Las Vegas elementary school teachers for enrichment programs in their classrooms.

Joanne Williams, a third grade teacher at Mackey Elementary, put her past experience as a ballet instructor to work in her classroom.  Monday through Thursday, Williams and two other teachers teach creative movement, intermediate and advanced ballet, with plans to expose her students to live ballet performances.  Ballet instruction takes place during the last 30 minutes of the school day.

Patricia Misa, a kindergarten teacher at Carson Elementary decided to use her mini grant to fund a Role Planing Community Helpers project, which  is meant to build her pupils' imaginations as well as start them thinking about what they want to be when they grow up.  The Project teaches the children about people in occupations who serve the community such as doctors, nurses, police officers, teachers and firefighters.

Colleen Pautz, Heron Elementary counselor, used her $300 grant to supply posters for her school's Conflict Resolution program, which teaches children to recognize and solve small problems on their own and to call teachers or faculty when there is a problem they can't handle.
