VOCATIONAL SERVICE MONTH SET FOR OCTOBER
DISTRICT
5300 MEMBERSHIP SEMINAR
From
Cliff Houser, District Membership Committee Chair (Altadena)
The September 16th seminar started off with a bang! Thirty-five (35) participants were jazzed up as Assistant Governor Dave Weakley (Alhambra) started the day's activities by warming up the group. He asked questions about District 5300 and as the answers came back, Dave threw the respondent a new District 5300 Member T-shirt. Here is the district challenge! (Purchase 5-10 shirts, then find the prospects to put into them). Step up to the plate and make your commitment NOW! Call Bill Jennings 626.577.1994 (Altadena), who will make sure you obtain your T-shirts. Yes! You can now purchase a Royal Blue T-shirt with MemberDistrict5300 embroidered on the pocket. Each new member, brought in this year, should proudly wear it to the District Conference next June in Palm Springs.
The slate of seminar speakers was super sized, with talent. We had Craig Valine speak to us on how to grow your club exponentially. After hearing of his background in marketing, his involvement with the Pasadena Junior Chamber of Commerce growing 171 new members, we knew we were in for a presentation of great magnitude. He circulated information that participants gathered up quickly to take back to their club membership committees. Listen up District 5300...Hear this loud and clear...He is not a Rotarian because no one has asked him to join!
Tim Harris from Data Warehouse shook the very foundations of web site hosting. You should have been there! He was Great. He showed us how to develop your club web page with little or no money. He then presented an open challenge to all District 5300; as he agreed to host your site for free. If you missed this great day in the history of our District, you need to call Tim today and see how you too can get up to speed on the Internet.
District Governor Elect, Margaret Cooker (Victorville), took the stage and just set the audience ablaze. She gave numerous ways that Rotarians are presented with opportunities to retain members and keep them active in Rotary projects. She made available many hand outs that would assist even the most successful clubs.
Loraine Morrison is the owner of her own real estate company. She presented us with many ideas on how we look from the new prospect's point of view. She related how, in the real estate business, appearance and "curb appeal" is everything. You may never have a second chance to impress a prospective member. You need to start now and look at your club from the eyes of a prospective member and begin to project the image of success. Your meetings, the way you greet new prospects, the room set up, speaker of the day, visual signs of past and present projects all set the stage for the "curb appeal" of your club. All of these things are what make a lasting impression on new prospective members.
Gerard Elia (Monrovia Mailing), challenged the group to be great networking partners. He handed out a list of items detailing what a person needs to or become, in order to be an outstanding net worker in the business environment. Rotarians need to get back into the mainstream of business networking. LOOK FOR CLASSIFICATION MIXERS IN THE NEAR FUTURE!
The big hit of the day was the debut of the new District 5300 software. Robert Burnham (ABS Computers) dazzled the audience with his new rendition of the "TRP" program (Targeting Rotary Prospects). The program will be on the web on or before October 6th. The site is a work in progress and the address will be given out to a few web page moguls to see how it works; make sure the colors are right, make suggestions or additions to our software program, etc.
You will be able to dial into the site by the end of October. The clubs who have been pro-active at seminar attendance have a jump up on those who have missed the presentations. Each club will need to identify a junior web master. Robert Burnham will train this group on how to maintain the club database. Let me give you a few features of this new program:
A data base that requires club password security
Pull up prospects by separate classification and zip code
Add and delete prospect data from your data base
Select specific prospects to receive a specific data mailer (brochure). You mail nothing), everything is done electronically!
Set up calling lists for fellow Rotarians to dial into the web site and follow up on the mailers
Each mailer will be noted into your notes section and you will begin to develop a history on each prospect
Statistical analysis will be maintained on your data base. Your data base statistics will reflect the market share you have in the community you serve
District Yellow Pages for members and their businesses
Note: Your club will be given a data base of at least 500 prospective Rotarians. They will be from zip code areas nearest your club and will consist of: executives, vice presidents, middle managers, business owners, retired businesspersons, and professionals. It will then be your job to verify that data base. People and businesses both move. The data may not be as current as the moving trend.
Our future dates for seminars at the Bidwell Forum in Glendora include the following dates: Saturday, January 6th and Saturday, April 21st. Secure these dates with members who you want to represent your club.
"Be Happy," "Stay Vigilant," and "Take Action."
ROTARY
FOUNDATION INFORMATION WORKSHOP
From
PDG Steve Garrett (Sierra Madre)
Would your club like to apply for a matching grant, but can't figure out the application process? Would you nominate a candidate for the GSE team, if you understood the process? October 14th we will be participating in a multi-district Rotary Foundation information meeting at the Orton Center, University of Redlands, California. The meeting will begin with registration at 8:00 a.m., General Session 9:00 a.m., followed by workshops beginning at 9:30 a.m.
Each participant is free to participate in three of the workshops. DISTRICT
LEADERS ATTEND ZONE INSTITUTE
From
PDG Steve Garrett (Sierra Madre)
Over 500 Rotarians attended the 2000 Zone 23&24 Institute held at the Jantzen Beach Doubletree Hotel in Portland, Oregon. Zone Institutes are an opportunity for past, present and future RI officers to gather for fellowship, information and inspiration. Speakers included RI President Frank Devlyn, RI President Elect Rick King and Past RI President Cliff Docterman.
Prior to the Zone Institute, our own District Governor Elect Margaret Cooker took part in the GETS (Governor Elect Training Seminar) that is part of the on-going training program for Governor Elects'. RI devotes a lot of time to training district Governors. District leaders attending the Institute included: PDG Steve and Marge Garrett (Sierra Madre), PDG Ernie and Gail Jensen (Arcadia), PDG Lee and Therese Mothershead, District Governor Sal and Julie Briguglio (Rancho Cucamonga), and District Governor Elect Margaret and Tony Cooker (Victorville).
PERMANENT
FUND INITATIVE (PFI)
From
PDG Tim Siu (Alhambra)
The Permanent Fund continues to grow to enhance The Rotary Foundation Programs. With the actual gifts and bequests, the PFI fund has reached more than $200 million, which is one-fifth of the way to the $ 1 billion goal for the Fund. Under the Fund, only the earnings will be used, and the principal is never spent.
A great number of Rotarians from District 5300 have chosen to include The Rotary Foundation in their estate plans thus making them eligible for Bequest Society membership. Bequest Society members include: Kenneth/Lena Au (Covina), E. Burdette/Helen Boileau (Pomona), Robert Eichel (San Marino), Fredd Halpert (Pahrump), Herbert/Elizabeth Hezlep (Monrovia), Robert Jugan (Montebello), Harold Kettell (Arcadia), Myron Stolp (Pasadena), Darlene/Howard Treat (Pahrump), and Conrad/Patricia von Bibra (South Pasadena).
It is the Foundation's hope that this increased awareness will help Rotarians better understand the programs, and stimulate giving within the clubs. It is because of gifts like these, that The Rotary Foundation will develop new channels for the flow of International understanding and brighten hopes for peace. It is our hope that this new Society of Friends will be changing lives through a legacy of hope.
DISTRICT
ALLOCATED $10,000 FOR COMMUNITY ASSISTANCE FUNDING
Letter
from Anne Gross, Manager, Humanitarian Grants Programs Division
The Trustees of The Rotary Foundation have adopted a new program called the Community Assistance Program (CAP). This program will allow districts to use District Designated Funds in their own communities or nations for projects that benefit the community and/or improve the lives of the economically disadvantaged.
The amount of DDF that each district will have available is based on 10% of the district's previous year's annual giving to a maximum of $10,000. Based on the Foundation's figures, as of June 30, 2000, District 5300 is able to utilize $10,000 for the Community Assistance Program in 2000-2001. These funds are available for use only in the 2000-2001 Rotary Year and cannot be carried forward to future years.
Districts have the option of applying for one or multiple awards with a minimum award of $1,000. Brochures and applications will be distributed to all districts in December 2000 and the Foundation will begin accepting applications on January 1, 2001. Applications will be accepted through April 15, 2001. Awards are subject to the following criteria:
Projects must not directly benefit a Rotarian, an employee of a club, district or other Rotary entity or of Rotary International, or a spouse, lineal descendent, a spouse of a lineal descendant, or an ancestor of any living Rotarian or Rotary employee.
Projects must not fund existing projects or activities primarily sponsored by another organization or fund operation expenses of another organization.
Project funds may not be used for travel, salaries or other administrative overhead costs.
Projects must be Rotary sponsored and publicly identified as such.
Projects must not involve liability on the part of Rotary International or its foundation except to provide the amount of the grant.
Program funds may not be used to reimburse applicants for projects already initiated or completed.
Funds may not be used to purchase land, buildings or to construct substantial buildings. Funds must be used in compliance with the Foundation's policies on construction and renovation.
The Rotary foundation expects that each district will establish a system of selecting projects that it proposes to be funded via the District Community Assistance Program.
Project funds cannot be used to fund the on-going projects of a Rotary club or district. This does not prevent the replication of successful projects that will benefit additional communities.
Projects that receive CAP funds must be of a short-term nature with the expectation that they will be completed within one year of payment. Funds must be forwarded to an account established specifically for the project, within one year of approval. Sponsors must provide interim reports every six months for the life of the grand and a final report is due within two months of a project's completion.
Project sponsors must agree to work within the Trustee established Stewardship Guidelines and utilize the Financial Guidelines and Regulations for Humanitarian Grant Projects.
District qualifying for the CAP award are permitted funding for a minimum of one project per district or $1,000 per project.
The Foundation expects Rotary sponsors to appoint two Rotarians who will provide oversight and management of award funds and who will serve as contacts for The Rotary Foundation.
SOUPER BOWL SUPPER, A SUPER SUCCESS
The Las Vegas North Rotary Club started running with the "Feed the Children" Project within hours of the closing of the District Assembly last April. Plans were made to involve as many of the Southern Nevada clubs as possible in response to Governor Sal's request that District 5300 be part of the International Feed the Hungry Project.
A "Souper Bowl Supper" was held on Friday evening, September 8th, at Opportunity Village. Linda Smith, Director of Opportunity Village offered their facility at no charge in appreciation for all that Rotary has done for The Village. Approximately 80 Rotarians, family and friends attended. Several Rotarians took advantage of the opportunity to bring their children to the event, so that could gain a greater understanding of the needs of children in neighboring countries. Pictures of the village and the Traumata Indians were provided by Rotary District 5730 of Leiland, Texas.
Each of the evenings' attendees was treated to a bowl of soup prepared from the dehydrated soup mix this Project is providing to the village school. Pizza was served as a back up to the soup, so that no one went away hungry. The charge for the evening was $5.00 per person, which included beverages.
An auction of items donated by North Las Vegas Rotarians began the evening fund raising. Donations and pledges made by Rotarians came to just over $7,000. With the help of Rotary District 5730, our own District 5300, and matching funds from Rotary International, it is anticipated that approximately $50,000 will be raised through this one event. This will provide food and education for the Tarahumara Indian children of Choquita Village, Mexico.
Rotary clubs from Mesquite, Overton and Pahrump were on hand to help Las Vegas North Rotary make this project a huge success.

SPIN AROUND THE WHEEL
By
Anne Donofrio-Holter (Montebello)
EDITOR'S NOTE: This new feature provides a brief summary of club activities from around our district compiled from club bulletins. If you would like your club's events and highlights included in "A Spin Around The Wheel'" please send your weekly club edition to Anne Donofrio-
The Montebello club was presented with a check for $9,000 representing funds that were leftover from the Montebello Business and Education Foundation that is no longer in existence. The funds will be deposited into the club's newly formed endowment fund with the interest used for charitable projects.
Boulder City member Bill Blockley recently visited Pune, India at his own expense to see how club funds were being used and to research and find a new club project. Hopefully the new project would be to assist the community in its medical efforts and also in obtaining potable water for their homes.
The Alhambra club has donated $500 in support of the Alzheimer's Memory Walk 2000. The club also received a letter of thanks for their donation of eyeglasses to the Cap Haitian Eye Center in Haiti.
Freemont members donated $150 from their weekly raffle to Catholic Charities. Club members also donated $500 to Opportunity Village for their upcoming Halloween Town fundraiser.
The Monrovia club sponsored a concert in the park on august 20 featuring Cajun style music.
South El Monte Rotarians donated $50 to the American Red Cross.
The Pasadena club is helping an orphanage in Uruapan, Mexico construct and furnish a large sewing room through a $4,000 donation. The sewing room is a second floor masonry addition to an existing building.
The Duarte club has received matching grant funds for their Foron water project in Nigeria.
Las Vegas North, Pahrump, Mesquite and Boulder City clubs joined to raise funds for food and education for children in the Choguita Tara Mara Indian Village of Choquito, Mexico.
Arcadia club members sponsored a tee sign at the annual "MADD" (Mothers Against Drunk Drivers) golf tournament. In addition, the club funded three projects for the Santa Anita Family YMCA. Twelve new overhead heaters were installed in the pool area to replace broken heaters. In addition new flooring was installed in the locker room, and a new alkalinity control system will carefully monitor the pool's pH.
The Las Vegas University club will be sponsoring a mini grant program at Desert Pines High School. The $200 grants will be used by teachers to provide something in their course of study for the students that they otherwise would not be able to have due to lack of funds.
Various Las Vegas clubs participated in the "Meal of Gruel." The purpose was to show everyone that food can be provided at low cost to feed the poor in villages around the world.
Pasadena Sunrise members participated in a BBQ at Union station for the homeless in the Pasadena area.
The Pomona club presented savings bonds to the winners of its annual family values essay contest. Each student submitted an essay describing a family value that has benefited the members of his/her family and or community. Out of 250 essays, 17 were chosen to receive savings bonds. All the winners emphasized the importance of family gatherings, love, honesty, respect of each other, and the importance of God in their lives.
San Dimas Rotarians, families and friends gathered for a festive luncheon to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the club.
