ROTARY 2000-2001:  CREATE AWARENESS - TAKE ACTION

VOLUME 73  NO. 6

GOVERNOR SAL BRIGUGLIO

 DECEMBER, 2000

HAPPY HOLIDAYS

GOVERNOR'S MESSAGE
From District Governor Sal Briguglio (Rancho Cucamonga)

Dear Fellow Rotarians:

It is time to create awareness about Rotary in our local communities.  I would encourage you to invite business and government leaders to your club and highlight the program of Rotary.  I suggest that you showcase scholarships, such as the 4-Way Speech, Dan Stover Music, your own club scholarship mini-grants, Santa clothes, Happy Shoes and all the other wonderful projects we do in our district.

On behalf of Julie and myself, we want to wish every Rotarian and their family a Happy and Holy Holiday Season.  No matter what your religious beliefs, I pray that our heavenly Father bless each and every one of you.

Yours in Rotary,

Sal Briguglio, District Governor

DISTRICT TO PAY INTERACTOR'S LIABILITY INSURANCE PREMIUMS
Gil Stromsoe, District Treasurer (Arcadia)

Governor Sal has announced that the District will begin paying the liability insurance premiums for the approximately 2000 Interact members associated with clubs in the district.  Past practice has been that each club was responsible for paying the premiums for the Interact members associated with the club. The District's decision will be a financial relief for those clubs who sponsor Interact clubs.  The liability insurance premiums cost $3.50 per Interact participant.

DINNER PLANS TO HONOR RI PRESIDENT FRANK DEVLYN ARE SET

On the evening of February 2, 2001 Rotary International President Frank Devlyn will be the guest of honor at a dinner at the Pasadena Hilton Hotel, Pasadena, California. The black tie optional dinner and dance will provide an opportunity for fellowship and recognition.  The Major Donor Reception begins at 6:00 p.m. with the doors to the dining area opening at 7:00 p.m.

This will be a unique opportunity for the recognition of Rotarians who support The Rotary Foundation.  The recognition will be as follows:

  1. Major donors will be invited to attend a reception of President Devlyn prior to the dinner event.

  2. New Major Donors will be recognized and greeted at the podium as a part of the dinner program.

  3. New Paul Harris fellows will be recognized during the dinner program.

  4. New Paul Harris Fellows will have the opportunity to have their picture taken receiving their recognition certificate and medal from RI President Devlyn following the dinner.

The District 5300 Rotary Foundation Committee is providing this dinner in cooperation with the Rotary Club of Pasadena who will act as the host Rotary club.  The sponsor's plan is to offer this opportunity on a breakeven basis for the district.  All funds raised by this event will be in the participating Rotary clubs possession, and will be directed into The Rotary Foundation at their discretion and direction.  Fundraising opportunities include:

  1. Major donor reception for President Frank and Gloria Rita Devlyn prior to the dinner event.  Each Club may buy tickets to the event at a cost of $25.  The club may sell these tickets, to Rotarians who are major donors, at a suggested price of $50.  The difference is to be used by the club as a part of their fundraising efforts.

  2. Tables of ten for the dinner will be sold to the Rotary clubs for $550 per table.  The club may sell these tickets at a suggested price of $100.

  3. A Silent Auction, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., will be held prior to the dinner in a room adjacent to the dining area.  Each Rotary club will have the opportunity to participate in a 50/50 split between the club who provided the auction item and the club represented by the purchaser of the item.

Each Rotary club has the opportunity to participate in the evening's events: Silent Auction, Reception, Recognition Dinner and fund raising activities.  It is suggested that participating clubs should consider the following.  Forms and additional details will be distributed to each club:

  1. Complete a Table Reservation Form.

  2. Complete Major Donor Reception Form.

  3. Sell dinner reservation seats.

  4. Sell or give tickets to the Major Donor Reception to Major Donors in club.

  5. Complete Dinner Registration Form.  Deadline, January 15, 2001.

  6. Complete New Paul Harris Recognition Request Form.  Deadline, January 15, 2001.

  7. Complete Major Donor Recognition Request Form.  Deadline, January 15, 2001.

  8. Promote attendance at the dinner.

  9. Promote new Paul Harris Fellows for recognition at the dinner.

  10. Promote new Major Donors for recognition at the dinner.

  11. Promote the donation of items for the Silent auction.

  12. Promote the attendance and participation in the Silent auction.

DISTRICT CONFERENCE TO BE SCENE OF "WHO KIDNAPPED THE GOVERNOR" - A GAME OF WHO, WHAT, AND WHERE

Dear Fellow Rotarians:

I Need Your Help!

We have discovered a plot to kidnap me at the District Conference!  The kidnapper is challenging each club to solve this mystery of who he is, the weapon he used, and in which room of the District Conference Hotel I will be kidnapped from.  We will publish a set of clues each month in the District Newsletter.  The kidnapper has said that any club who inducts a new member or presents a Paul Harris Fellow will receive a bonus clue.  Please encourage your members to work on earning bonus clues and solve this mystery!

Please Save Me!

Governor Sal

A REAL MYSTERY, WITH REAL PEOPLE, REAL WEAPONS, A REAL CRIME SCENE, AND ONE REAL VICTIM...SEVEN SUSPECTS, TEN WEAPONS, SIX CRIME SCENES, AND ONE VICTIM.
CAN YOU SOLVE THE MYSTERY?

 RULES AND PRIZES TO FOLLOW

DISTRICT 5300 MEMBERSHIP COMMITTEE MEETS
Highlights and Discussion Topics from November 4th Meeting

  1. Update on district web site construction:  Robert Burnham is continuing to ready the web site for its first Rotary club.  He is being assisted by Tim Harris.  We are testing the site with data from the Altadena club.  Clubs should be able to see some real change on the site by November 25th.  Keep your eye on the site www.member5300.com.  Want to know how to obtain free web access and assistance with your web page....call Jim Harris from the Victorville club.

  2. Committee reviewed attendance from the two previous seminars: June 10th seminar, 16 clubs represented, total attendance was 3l.  September 16th seminar, 12 clubs represented, total attendance was 31.

  3. Update on District Brochures:  Bill Jennings indicated that the brochures are now at the printers.  It will take a couple of weeks for Pasadena City College to complete them.  They will be ready for our first mailers to be sent out by January.  The second and third mailers are being designed and will be ready for layout by the end of November.  They will be ready for printing by January 2001.

  4. Planning session for January 6th seminar was presented:  We will stay with the three original themes for the year 2000-2001.  1. Bring prospective Rotarians to a meeting. 2. Make them into Rotarians. 3. Keep them active and enjoying Rotary. Speakers were identified for the January Seminar.

  5. Committee Chair, Cliff Houser, will relinquish his position next year in order to fulfill his duties of President of the Altadena Rotary club.  He indicated his desire to retain membership on the committee.

THE GOVERNORS ARE COMING
From District Governor Elect Margaret Cooker (Victorville)

530 District Governors Elect from all over the world will be invading Anaheim in February for the International Assembly that prepares them for the office of District Governor 2001-2002.  Seven days of intensive training will be awaiting each incoming District Governor.

Will you make their stay in Southern California even more memorable by inviting one or more couples to stay in YOUR home either before or after the Assembly?  The hosts' responsibilities for the HOMESTAY program are to house the Rotarian (usually with spouse) for a few days in your home, most often for 4 days and 3 nights (February 13-17 and/or February 21-25).  Besides lodging, meals and overall hospitality, the host provides for visits to their areas cultural and scenic interests, vocational visits, Rotary club meetings, and a liberal dose of American family life.  Often several Rotarians will get together to share transportation and arrangements for the daily activities.

If you are interested in this aspect of Rotary's object of advancing world understanding and fellowship, please contact Jim Johannsen, PDG, Co-chair of this seven-district program at 805.967.9229 or send an e-mail to johannsenj@aol.com.  Jim will send an application and brochure that describes the program in more detail.

RI INITIATES CREDIT CARD PROGRAM
From RI President Frank Devlyn

I am writing to make you aware of a new program to support Rotary International and The Rotary Foundation.  As you may be aware, the Board of Directors of Rotary International (with concurrence of the Trustees of The Rotary Foundation) recently approved a new credit card in the US that will bear the name and emblem of Rotary International.  All royalties generated from purchases using this officially approved credit card will go directly to The Rotary Foundation.

Because of the importance of this program in supporting The Rotary Foundation, I am asking for your help in informing the members of your club about this credit card.  Obviously, the sooner members of your club obtain the Rotary credit card, the sooner the programs of The Rotary Foundation will benefit.  Therefore, I am asking you to inform the members of your club about the credit card not later than December 15.  Application forms are currently available from either your district Foundation chair, district governor, or by following a link provided at the RI web site (www.rotary.org).

Additional information regarding the New Rotary International Credit Card Program can be found on page 12 of the October issue of The Rotarian.

Yours in Rotary

Frank J. Devlyn
President, Rotary International

2ND ANNUAL GEORGE R. HENSEL PRIZE IN ETHICS ESSAY CONTEST FOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS
From Kathy Brandes, Assistant Governor, Region B (Monrovia)

The second annual District 5300 George Hensel Ethics Essay Contest will be held in the spring of 2001, with the winners announced at the District Conference in June.  As with last year's contest, this essay contest is designed to challenge high school students to analyze urgent ethical issues confronting them in today's complex world.

The contest is open to high school students throughout District 5300, with prizes of $100 to $1000 awarded to the winners.  Applications with additional information and requirements will be mailed to all presidents in the the District in late January.

PERMANENT FUND INITATIVE (PFI)
From PDG Tim Siu (Alhambra)

The Permanent Fund continues to grow to enhance The Rotary Foundation Programs.  With the actual gifts and bequests, the PFI fund has reached more than $200 million, which is one-fifth of the way to the $ 1 billion goal for the Fund.  Under the Fund, only the earnings will be used, and the principal is never spent.

It is the Foundation's hope that this increased awareness will help Rotarians better understand the programs, and stimulate giving within the clubs.  It is because of gifts like these, that The Rotary Foundation will develop new channels for the flow of International understanding and brighten hopes for peace.  It is our hope that this new Society of Friends will be changing lives through a legacy of hope.

A SPIN AROUND THE WHEEL
By Anne Donofrio-Holter (Montebello)

EDITOR'S NOTE: This new feature provides a brief summary of club activities from around our district compiled from club bulletins.  If you would like your club's events and highlights included in "A Spin Around The Wheel'" please send your weekly club edition to Anne Donofrio-

The West Covina club distributed 30 Thanksgiving baskets for needy families in their area.  A delegation from their sister club, the Agua Caliente Rotary in Tijuana, participated in the activities.

Victorville Rotarians assisted in a shopping spree for 14 needy children.

Las Vegas University Rotarians, along with Rotarians from other Las Vegas clubs, acted as chaperones on Halloween for children in the valley area.

Arcadia club members collected excess Halloween candy that will be used to fill piņatas for delivery to children in Tijuana in January.  The club donated $100 to the Arcadia Chamber of Commerce for a chair in the conference room and club members participated in maintenance activities on the Mt. Zion trail.

Montebello Rotarians David Avirom, Pete Adriance, Joe Naylor, Luis Trujillo, and Anne Donofrio-Holter, along with members of the Montebello Lions Club, packed 150 Thanksgiving baskets with turkey and all the trimmings, and distributed them to needy residents in the community.  Upon delivery of the baskets, many of the children greeted club members with hand-made thank you notes.  This is the second year the two clubs have joined forces to help those less fortunate at thanksgiving time.

The Pasadena Sunrise club raised $3,110 at its annual Rotary bingo and silent auction fundraiser.  The funds will be used to provide mini grants for Pasadena teachers.

The Alhambra club presented the fixings for Thanksgiving dinner to residents of Ronald McDonald House in Los Angeles.  They also contributed funds to help pay for a room in the house for use by families of children being treated at Children's Hospital.  Again this year, club members served as waiters at the YMCA's annual celebrity luncheon.  The club won second place for tips collected for the YMCA and club president Vince Kemp won the funniest costume award.

East Los Angeles Rotarians made a donation to the Latino Peace Officers Association's annual Christmas gift give-away for local children.

The Apple Valley club contributed $3,000 to the upgrade of Corwin Park for the purchase and installation of new park equipment. The club has also agreed to help the Mojave Mesa PTA with a donation and volunteers to build a shaded school bus bench facility for the school.

Boulder City Rotarians participated in the planting of over 900 shrubs and trees along Adams Blvd., and Veterans Memorial Drive.  In addition, the Rotarians cooked a pancake breakfast for the many volunteers working on the project.

The Altadena club purchased a Rotary banner to be displayed at the city's Old Fashioned Days parade.
