Governor's Message

Doug Fowler

DG Doug FowlerMay is International Service Month. It’s the time to “Reach Within to Embrace Humanity” and live up to our motto of “Service above Self.”..  We all should be proud to be members of a district that has funded several international service projects this Rotary year.  We have funded projects such as potable drinking water in the Philippines, a bakery at an orphanage in Mexico, an artesian well in Brazil, cataract surgeries in India, and job creation for youth in Nigeria, to name only a few. Other projects are underway in Sweden, Nigeria, Mexico, and India.  Local projects have been funded for veterans’ parks, police museums, boys and girls clubs, and elementary schools throughout the district.

We have continued our generous contributions to Rotary's global effort to eradicate the polio virus from the world. As we completed the 3rd quarter of the Rotary Year, District 5300 Rotarians have contributed over $69,000 towards a goal of $131,000 this year. We have a ways to go during the final push and I believe we can meet this goal.  Our total contributions since the start of the current campaign on December 2007 exceeds $523,000.

We will acknowledge the eight Rotarians from the district who traveled to India in February to participate in that country's National Immunization Day. Make a point to attend their presentation at District Conference where you will hear how it is to go door to door, administering drops of the vaccine to children under five years of age. We are so close to achieving our goal, and District 5300 Rotarians can be proud of our personal efforts, but the goal will not be reached without our continued contributions.

Our Wheelchair Distribution Project raised in excess of $75,000, and I am very proud that participation of over 75% of the clubs in the District felt this to be a worthy “hands-on” international project that provides mobility for over 800 needy neighbors in Mexico. Please join us in the first phase of distributions in Hermosillo and San Carlos, Mexico in June, or later this fall for the second phase, when we plan to distribute in Michoacán, where my home club has a relationship with the community of Puruandiro.

This year we have four graduate-level scholars attending universities around the world. In addition to their studies, a component of the program includes their creation of and participation in community service projects in their respective communities. The district has allocated $104,000 of our RI Foundation funds for this goal of engendering peace through world understanding.

Our Outbound Group Study Exchange Team left for Chile on March 24th. This group of four young business/professional men and women will be attending District Conference along with the Chilean Team that is due to arrive in the district May 6. They will tour our district for four weeks, staying in our homes, visiting our noteworthy sites, and accompanying us to our places of employment. This exchange is a bridge between our cultures, enabling each team member, as well as each of us, to learn about the other's social, political, cultural, business, and professional systems. I encourage all Rotarians to engage with them as they visit your area and to enjoy their company at the District conference.

Happy Trails!

Doug and Debbie

Montebello Rotary Club Matching Grant Celebrated in Ensenada

Ensenada Centenaria Rotary Club Past President Dr. Mario Troncoso aka “Palito” and Montebello Rotary Club Past President Robert Monzon presenting Hospital Medical Equipment valued at $35,000 provide by District 5300 Matching GrantSeveral Montebello Rotary Club members attended an event held at the Ensenada General Hospital.  As Past President of the Montebello Rotary Club stated, “This is a dream come true for me.”  He was referring to the Rotary Foundation 5300 Matching Grant he and Past President Dr. Mario Troncoso of the Ensenada Centenaria Club applied for.  On Friday April 30, 2012 over fifty people including local TV and print media showed up to receive $35,000 worth of medical equipment slated for the Ensenada General Hospital.

In attendance were several hospital administrators, including Dr. Ernesto J. Martinez Palacio, Director of the Ensenada General Hospital.  Dr. Palacio commented that, “The equipment is much needed and will be put immediately to work.” He also noted that the equipment is of high quality.  This type of high tech monitoring equipment is highly desirable but rarely available.  The hospital will use the equipment in their Maternity Wing, which has a high demand for services and a real need for better equipment.  Dr. Palacio said, “This equipment will help save lives as we will have the capability to monitor expectant mothers and their unborn children. With this equipment we can monitor any changes and catch any problems earlier then we do now, which will result in lives saved.”

To help celebrate the day, several Montebello Rotarians and their family attended the event, Past President Robert Monzon and his wife Stephanie with his sister in law,Cathy Sena, along with Pete Adriance and his wife, Pilar, Assistant Governor Ted Jones, and his guest, Delia.  Included were Montebello Rotarians Fernando Cuevas, George Pacheco, and past member Jeff Solowitz.  Showing support and seeking to increase their already active involvement in Baja California were East Los Angeles Rotarians Rudy Salas, Joe Vara, and “Hal,” and from District 5280, AG Sal Bingham.

During the presentation Past President Dr. Mario Troncoso (known as Palito) was beaming when he spoke about the importance of the Rotary International Foundation and the work those resources do worldwide.  He thanked the Montebello Club and District 5300 for the help provided by the Matching Grant to his community hospital.  After the ceremony the entire group was given a tour of the remodeling being done at the hospital, including the new critical care wing for adults and infants.  The Ensenada Rotary Club then invited guests to Dr. Eloy’s house for a social gathering, Ensenada style.  Palito’s wife, Monica, treated everyone to her own special tortas she makes with her own recipe.  Past President Robert Monzon commented, “What a wonderful afternoon this was! I thank the Rotary Foundation for the work it does around the world and even in our own backyard.  I hope more Southern California Rotary Clubs find projects they can participate in here in Baja if they aren’t already doing so already.  There is a great need and all projects are worthwhile and have a great impact.”

Arcadia Rotary and Mt. Sierra College Help Tijuana Children with Desk and Computer DonationChildren residing at the Colegio Kolbe de la Immaculada Orphanage and Secondary School in Tijuana, Mexico can now do their school work in an environment conducive to good learning thanks to a donation of 35 classroom style computer desks and four computers by Mt. Summerlin Rotary Club Promotes Literacy

Summerlin Rotary Club Promotes LiteracyCaution – Accident Ahead. Danger! Minefield. Imagine not being able to read simple directions or road signs or warnings.
Yet becoming literate, just learning to read and write, is not always easy. The economy in Las Vegas is suffering. School budgets are cut to the bone, particularly challenging for those schools serving our neediest populations.  Libraries are often among the first school services cut.
During Literacy Month, Rotary Summerlin collected new and very gently used children's books for McMillan Elementary School's library. President-Elect Gregg Townsend and Literacy Chair Betty Mahalik presented them to the school librarian, Amanda Gubler.  "Amanda was beyond delighted at the donation.  I didn’t count, but I’m guessing there were close to 100 new and gently used books," Betty commented.
Las Vegas Summerlin Rotary Club also took part in Nevada Reads' Pennies for Pages Read-A-Thon, sponsoring students to read as many pages as they could from their favorite books.  Thanks partly to Dennis Filangeri, who donated his raffle winnings, club contributions topped 20,000 pennies.
Summerlin Rotary definitely did its part for literacy this year.

Rotary Club of West Covina Awards Teachers’ Mini-Grants

West Covina Teacher Mini-GrantsThe Rotary Club of West Covina has been awarding Teachers’ Mini-Grants to teachers in their school district since 1985. On March 29, 2012, thirteen grants of up to $300 each were awarded to classroom teachers. The grants are awarded based upon applications which are judged by a panel of Rotarians, school district personnel, and community leaders. The teachers will use the money for projects that will further enrich and enhance the education of our students.

Annual Program Fund Giving: San Marino Rotary Leads the Way!

The Rotary Club of San Marino is once again leading the way in Rotary Foundation giving in District 5300. The results for 3rd quarter giving for the 2011-2012 year are in and members of the San Marino Rotary club have given an average of $278.29 per member so far this year. Two other clubs, San Dimas and Pasadena After Hours, have average member contributions over $200.  These three clubs lead the group of 14 clubs whose members have already reached the sustaining member level of $100 average contributions for the year. The rest of the group includes members of the Alhambra, Apple Valley, Boulder City Sunrise, Las Vegas, Las Vegas Central, Las Vegas West, Laughlin, North Las Vegas, Sierra Madre, Upland and Victorville Rotary Clubs.
“Annual Program Fund giving is critical to the mission of Rotary International,” pointed out District Governor Doug Fowler. These contributions allow our District to provide funds for International Grants, District Grants, Ambassadorial Scholarships and the Group Study Exchange program. Rotary just would not be Rotary without these efforts to improve lives around the world and in our own communities.
If you have not made your personal annual contribution to the Rotary Foundation Annual Programs Fund, please consider doing so before the end of June. If your club still has not forwarded your contributions to the Foundation for the year, ask your club officers to get them in! As a District we are 2/3 of the way to our annual goal of $286,085.  We don’t want to fall short.
Finally, Rotary’s effort to eradicate polio is still on track. There have been only 40 cases of polio reported so far in 2012, compared to 650 for the year 2011. India has remained polio free for 15 months now. District 5300 is committed to seeing this effort through. Members of clubs in District 5300 have donated over $69,000 so far this year, which is a little more than 50% of our goal. The Rotary Club of East Los Angeles is the top per capita giving club to Polio Plus this year with average contributions of $142 per member.
Let’s end the year on a high note, exceed our goal, and show the world the level of commitment District 5300 Rotarians have.

In Memoriam

PDG Lee HarlanCalifornia native and long-time Rotarian PDG Lee Harlan (02-03) passed away Sunday, April 1st. He was director of Pomona's alumni program from 1969-1997 and managed the development of an alumni relations program that became the model for many liberal arts colleges across the country. During his tenure, Pomona's alumni population grew from 11,000 to 18,000. To meet their needs, he developed a robust regional alumni presence throughout the U.S. and started the College's alumni travel study program. Among the first for small liberal arts colleges, it has sent alumni to France, the Galapagos, Germany, Greece, Greenland, South Africa and Spain among many other wonderful locations. The class reunion giving program was also initiated under his guidance and now provides important financial support to the College through the Alumni Fund. He continued to assist Pomona College as an alumni volunteer following his retirement.
